Extreme Makeover with Fraxel® Laser Skin Treatments
Lasers have revolutionized many different aspects of medicine. From LASIK, which utilizes a laser to reshape the cornea and improve vision to LANAP, which replaces one of the most painful of all dental procedures–scaling and root planning–with a relatively painless laser procedure, lasers are making all branches of medicine better every day. Sciton’s Profile laser system is one of the newest innovations in laser technology used for laser skin resurfacing, able to deliver the same results as the older CO2 lasers, but without the extended recovery time. Whereas the CO2 lasers used brute force, the Profile system uses technological sophistication to give great results with minimal tissue damage. Where many lasers are just lasers, the Sciton system uses Optical Multiplexing, a Telecentric Scanner, Beam-shaping Optics, and Advanced Tissue Cooling to improve the performance of its lasers.
Optical Multiplexing
Lasers are intensely focused light that is monochromatic, that is, made of only a single wavelength. This gives them power, but it is also a limitation. The Sciton Profile system gets around this limitation by using optical multiplexing. In this innovation, a spinning mirror can reflect bursts from two different lasers onto a treated area so that the ablating (skin-removing) laser energy can be interspersed with a cooler, coagulating, or healing laser. It could also allow two identical lasers to work in tandem for a double speed procedure.
Beam-Shaping Optics
Although the light produced by a laser is uniform, it is not equally intense through its entire cross-section. Many lasers produce a beam that is hot in the middle, but cool at the edges, risking burns in the center, but not treating the edges. The Sciton Profile system has solved this problem with its advanced optics that ensure the beam has equal energy across its diameter.
Telecentric Scanner
Another problem with laser treatments in the past was simple operator error. Laser technicians would either miss spots, treat the same spot multiple times, or treat adjacent spots sequentially, leading to incidental burns. The Sciton Profile system has solved this problem through the use of a telecentric scanner. This computerized scanner develops an idealized treatment algorithm for any given area, making sure that the treatment is completely uniform, at exactly the desired level, and much faster than previous treatment methods.
Advanced Tissue Cooling
Finally, the Sciton Profile system minimizes incidental damage to adjacent tissues by utilizing an advanced tissue cooling system that works even as the skin is being treated to minimize your discomfort both during and after the treatment and reduce your recovery time.
And although the Sciton Profile system is gentle on your skin, it doesn’t mean that it is any less tough than other laser treatments. It is able to treat:
